Commercial lighting, an underrated sales lever
In a shop, light is not just about seeing. It draws the eye from the street, guides customers through their journey, showcases products and sets the identity of the brand. Poorly designed lighting tires the eye, flattens colours and drives people away, while well-judged lighting holds attention, adds value and triggers the purchase. It is a fast-return investment, often overlooked in favour of furniture or décor.
Since 1971, Rodalight has been designing lighting for shops of every size across Belgium, from the neighbourhood boutique to the high-end showroom. Our approach combines commercial strategy (what to highlight, how to guide the customer) with technical rigour (colour rendering, visual comfort, energy control). Good commercial lighting is the kind that serves your sales without being noticed.
What good lighting changes for your shop
Beyond aesthetics, well-designed commercial lighting acts on measurable levers.
- Appeal from outside: a well-lit window catches passers-by and increases the store entry rate.
- Product value: accent lighting directs attention towards high-margin items or new arrivals.
- Customer journey: controlled lighting contrasts naturally guide movement and give rhythm to the retail space.
- Faithful rendering: a high CRI restores true colours, essential in food, textile, jewellery or cosmetics.
- Cost control: a well-sized LED relamping sharply reduces consumption and maintenance, while improving rendering.
Our technical benchmarks by type of shop
Each sector has its own requirements. A jeweller seeks brilliance and precision, a butcher the faithfulness of reds, a showroom the staging. Here are the benchmarks we apply, taking into account the EN 12464-1 standard on the lighting of indoor workplaces and visual comfort (glare limitation, UGR index).
Colour rendering (CRI)
The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) measures how faithfully a source restores colours. In retail, a CRI above 90 is recommended whenever product colour matters: meat, fruit and vegetables, clothing, jewellery, cosmetics. Below that, products look dull and less appealing.
Colour temperature
It shapes the mood and the perception of products. Warm light (2700K to 3000K) flatters wood, bread and textiles and sets a welcoming atmosphere. Neutral light (4000K) suits technical, cosmetics or fresh-food spaces where perceived freshness matters.
Glare (UGR)
Poorly aimed commercial lighting glares both customers and staff. Controlling the UGR index (Unified Glare Rating) ensures lasting visual comfort, especially behind a counter or at the till where staff spend the whole day.
| Type of shop | Recommended CRI | Temperature | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jewellery, watchmaking | > 90 | 3000K to 4000K | Brilliance, accent |
| Butcher, fresh food | > 90 | 2700K to 3000K | Faithful reds |
| Bakery | > 90 | 2700K to 3000K | Warmth, appeal |
| Clothing, textile | > 90 | 3000K to 4000K | Material rendering |
| Showroom, exhibition | > 90 | 3000K | Staging, flexibility |
| Pharmacy, cosmetics | > 90 | 4000K | Clarity, perceived freshness |

Concrete results
Our projects speak for themselves. For the Bouvy store, more than 1000 GU10 LED spots delivered precise textile rendering and a sharp drop in consumption. At the Galerie Jean Nelis, adjustable tracks with high CRI and zero UV enhance every artwork. These are examples of the balance between commercial performance and technical demand.

How does a commercial lighting project work?
Depending on your project, several formats are possible. For quick advice or a doubt about a specific zone, Express Advice provides expert feedback within 48 hours. To visualise the result before works, the Visual Study delivers concrete renders. For a full fit-out or a surface relamping, the Custom Study covers design, costing and installation.
