Rodalight’s Expertise

Lighting Florist made to measure

In a florist’s shop, lighting is the discreet ally that reveals the natural beauty of the flowers, preserves their apparent freshness and creates a warm atmosphere that makes people want to come in and linger. Lighting that is too cold distorts the colours of the flowers. Lighting that is too warm can make them appear to age more quickly. At Rodalight, we design bespoke lighting solutions tailored to Belgian florists, combining exceptional colour rendering, care for the plants and consistency with the identity of your space.

The aim: natural, flattering light that showcases every arrangement, enhances your shop window and creates a memorable sensory experience for your customers.

Common applications:

  • Floral shop windows and displays
  • Sales area and customer circulation space
  • Consultation and arrangement counter
  • Floral design studio
  • Refrigerated areas and floral display fridges

Why CRI is the first criterion in a florist's shop

A flower displayed under a CRI 80 source loses part of its chromatic truth. Reds darken slightly, yellows pull towards greenish tones, whites appear slightly yellowed. These distortions are subtle but immediately perceived by the customer, often without identifying them as a lighting issue. They simply leave with a less favourable impression.

In a florist's shop, we work with minimum CRI 90 to 95 sources in display zones. At this level, the reds of roses, the purples of irises, the oranges of gerberas and the whites of lilies are rendered with their natural brilliance, in their best possible light.

Colour temperature: the range that flatters flowers

  • 2700-3000 K : recommended for window displays and main stands, enhances reds and warm tones, creates a warm atmosphere consistent with the identity of an artisan florist
  • 3000-3500 K : acceptable for the arrangement counter and work zones, better visual acuity without distorting colours
  • Above 4000 K : to be avoided on products, creates blue casts in cool tones and delivers a clinical rendering incompatible with the floral universe

Plants and heat: a balance to manage

Traditional halogen sources generated significant radiant heat that accelerated the wilting of flowers displayed nearby. Modern LED solves this problem: heat is dissipated rearward via the heat sink, and forward radiation is virtually zero. Flowers in the window can be lit at close range without suffering the drying effect of older installations.

For flower refrigerators, source selection is stricter. We use fittings specifically approved for refrigerated enclosures, with appropriate IP ratings and an operating range that covers low positive temperatures (typically 2 to 8 °C in a floral refrigerator).

Atmosphere and visual identity

A florist's shop lighting is not purely functional. It builds the atmosphere of the space — that particular feeling when entering a flower shop: the contrast between the outside world and this colourful, fragrant space at a gentle temperature. Well-calibrated lighting amplifies this transition and creates a sensory experience consistent with the quality of the products on offer.

  • Accent on key arrangements : a directional spot on a signature bouquet creates a focal point that draws the eye from the moment of entry
  • Lighting elevated plants : tall plants (orchids on shelves, hanging plants) benefit from upward or lateral lighting that showcases their volume
  • Chromatic consistency : a 2700-3000 K palette across the entire retail floor guarantees consistent reading of all arrangements, with no zones where flowers would appear different

Frequently asked questions

Does LED lighting accelerate the ageing of cut flowers?

No, provided sources without significant UV emission are selected. Modern LEDs emit very little UV, unlike older fluorescent tubes which could accelerate the degradation of floral pigments. Since radiant heat from LED is virtually zero, flowers displayed close to sources do not suffer accelerated drying.

How to light a flower refrigerator without disrupting the cold chain?

By selecting specific low heat output sources, approved for refrigerated enclosures. We systematically verify source compatibility with the refrigerator's temperature range and the required IP ratings. A standard source placed in a flower refrigerator can destabilise the thermal regulation and generate condensation on the optics.

Conclusion

Florist's shop lighting is an investment in showcasing every arrangement, in the atmosphere of the space and in customer loyalty. Faithful colour rendering, controlled heat on plants and an atmosphere consistent with the artisan identity of the florist form a whole that works constantly for the business.
