More and more companies are opting for open-plan offices. They often cover a large surface area and are more likely to benefit from outside light. However, not all workplaces are so lucky. What’s more, the employee in the middle of the office will not receive the same amount of light as someone working next to a window. It is therefore necessary to provide a lighting solution so that everyone can concentrate in the same way.
Do you have individual workspaces? Some of your employees may not have access to a window. Install light fittings to alleviate this lack of light, and ensure that your employees work in the best possible conditions.
Which luminaires to choose?
LED ribbons, recessed panels, spotlights, etc. There are several ways of countering the lack of light in a dark office. Each of them has its own specific features and they complement each other. In fact, depending on the area you want to light, it is advisable to install certain luminaires in particular.
- General lighting is very important. It needs to be even throughout the workspace. For example, recessed tiles in a false ceiling, ceiling lights or chandeliers are ideal for creating indirect lighting that won’t dazzle employees. What’s more, this type of ceiling-mounted light reduces unwanted shadows.
- In corridors or sanitary areas, spotlights are ideal because they are more directional.
- People using the office space should be able to install a desk lamp to suit them. Articulated structures are ideal for choosing the desired orientation and intensity of light.
By combining these different types of light source, you can contribute to a more comfortable workspace.

And the other rooms?
Your company certainly has other areas, such as a meeting room, a break room or a cafeteria. Their lighting also deserves your attention.
Sometimes these spaces are multi-purpose. In the same day, you can use them as a work area and then as a conference room, for example. In these areas, sound reverberation can be a problem. To avoid this, simply install decorative lighting made from acoustic felt. As well as providing light, they act as a resonance chamber that absorbs sound. These light fittings can be circular pendants with a felt cover in the centre. They can also be customised, as they are available in several different colours.
Does your company have a meeting room with overhead projectors? Create a subdued atmosphere by installing dimmable products. These are dimmers connected to a switch. They allow you to change the intensity of the light according to your current preferences.

“It’s too ambitious a project”.
Contrary to what you might think, changing lighting is not complicated. Companies with false ceilings have a real advantage. It will be very easy for them to replace this equipment because there won’t be many changes to make.
If that’s not the case for you, Rodalight can provide you with real expertise. We’ll help you choose the light sources that are right for you.
The advantages of bright offices
Greater visual comfort. A bright working environment makes your employees’ work more pleasant, especially when they are working in front of a computer screen. In a dark space, on the other hand, they tire their eyes more quickly, which tends to lead to headaches.
This ocular well-being naturally leads to improved performance and concentration on the part of your employees. That’s why you need to choose your lamps wisely. Let’s look at this together in the next section.
Why choose LED light sources?
The efficiency of LED lamps is well established. Everyone now knows that this technology is far superior to fluorescent systems, and that it is essential to replace them.
LED lighting has less impact on the environment than halogen and lasts longer. Companies that change their old systems therefore save energy.
Standard EN 12464-1
In Belgium, when it comes to workplace lighting, there is standard NBN EN 12464-1 to comply with. Its aim is to provide workers with lighting that is appropriate for visual tasks. To achieve this, light intensity (in other words, the amount of light on a given surface) must average 500 lux (or lx) for an office.
This standard also specifies a glare and discomfort index (UGR). For offices, this must not exceed 19.
Finally, it specifies a colour rendering index (CRI) ranging from 80 to 100 Ra, with 100 being the rendering of natural light.
