Relegated to the background, it ends up being a small budget item. And yet, lighting every room in your home is just as important as decorating it. Here’s a look at the reasons to invest in good lighting.
Why is good home lighting important?
Many of us think of light as a functional element, necessary to brighten up our evenings. That’s true, of course. The primary role of light fittings is to guarantee your visual comfort when evening falls or on rainy days. But it’s also much more than that.

Light allows you to create a unique sensory experience, to give your home a special atmosphere and to enhance it by playing on perceptions. With the right quality lighting, you can bring life to your home, creating a space that’s a pleasure to live in, where every decorative element is highlighted. Good lighting will help you feel safe and at home.
Surround yourself with professionals to shine brightly
Because it contributes to your everyday comfort, it’s essential to think about your lighting from the outset of your interior design project. The difficulty remains, however, in making the right choices, in terms of location, intensity and product.
What colour temperature and luminous flux should you choose for your living room? Should you opt for wall lights or suspended luminaires? Where and how should recessed spotlights be installed? Directional or not? With separate bulbs or an all-in-one system? And what design will fit in with the style of your interior? These are just some of the questions that underline the importance of enlisting the help of a lighting specialist.
In addition to the growing complexity of the market when it comes to luminaires and bulbs, creating a lighting atmosphere tailored to your needs and desires requires expertise. The choice of lighting depends on various criteria, such as the purpose of your room, your lifestyle, the atmosphere you want to create in your home, the colour rendering index, the absence of glare, reflections, shadows, etc.
A few practical tips: focus on three strategic rooms in the home
The kitchen, a clever blend of functional and atmospheric lighting
As a living space where you can give free rein to your creativity, you need to calibrate the lighting in your kitchen to make it both functional and warm.
- You could plan to highlight specific areas, such as worktops, cooking surfaces or the laundry area, with “warm white” light (3000 Kelvin and very high CRI 90+ (Colour Rendering Index)).
- If, on the other hand, you are lucky enough to have a beautiful central island that extends into a dining table or an attractive dining area, then opt for softer light, known as warm white (around 2700 Kelvin) and luminaires and light sources with a high CRI. You can, for example, work with suspended lights placed above the table or short design tube systems fixed to the ceiling and directed towards the table with relatively wide beams to clearly delineate the dining area.
- For atmospheric lighting, you can also illuminate the niches in your kitchen units or display cabinets with LED strips or apply LEDs here and there for indirect lighting.
The living room, the cocooning place par excellence
If there’s one room in the house that we generally want to be warm, it’s the living room! The colour temperature and luminous flux of your lamps are therefore essential for creating the cosy effect you’re looking for. For the general lighting of your living room, we recommend that you use a warm light source. You can also mix light fittings (spotlights, wall lights and pendant lights, for example) for a highly stylish effect.
A little advice from our experts
But don’t forget to include more functional lamps, such as reading lights for those who love to read. You can also include floor lamps to illuminate certain areas of your room without using the general lighting.
Finally, it can be useful to define the lighting points for which you want the light to be dimmable. If you don’t, you may regret not having thought of or planned for this. And once the work is finished, it becomes very expensive to reopen ceilings and rewire.
The bathroom, the place where we take care of ourselves
When it comes to bathroom lighting, there’s a whole range of criteria to consider. Firstly, you need to choose specific, moisture-proof fixtures. Then, because you don’t want to slip when you get out of the shower, it’s advisable to opt for bright, warm white (3000k) general lighting, so you can see clearly. Last but not least, think about your mirror, which needs special lighting to avoid shadows on your face.
